Consumption of the energy drinks keeps the people alert since by boosting the energy levels. However, the energy drinks are not on the list of healthy drinks, because they contain plenty of chemicals, which make them highly dangerous for body health.
Studying this matter on a case of the death of a 33-year old Cory Terry, a Brooklyn resident, researchers found a link between energy drinks and heart attack. Terry did not smoke or drank, but he used to drink a Red Bull can daily, which was his only flaw, since he was physically active.
According to the study of Mayo Clinic, energy drinks can aggravate cardiovascular issues and provoke a heart attack. In this study were involved 15 healthy people and they were supposed to drink a daily dose of ½ a liter of an unidentified energy drink. Scientists found afterward that this drink increased their blood pressure by 10% after 4 hours. Additionally, their heart rate and blood pressure were higher, which raised their risk of heart attack.
The Australian Poisons Center made the list of the risks caused by the over-consumption of energy drinks:
1. Tremor / shaking
2. Respiratory distress
5. Agitation / restlessness
6. Gastrointestinal upset
7. Chest pain/ischemia
8. Palpitations / tachycardia
10. Paresthesia (tingling or numbing of the skin)
Another component of the energy drinks, like Red Bull, that causes health problems despite the high amounts of sugar and caffeine is taurine. Taurine is a powerful stimulator.
As a serious problem, it was the subject of the researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO). They have written a narrative review of studies on the policies related to energy drinks and the health risks linked to the consumption of them.
The review was published in the health journal Frontiers in Public Health. The focus of the review was on the health risks associated with energy drink consumption are primarily related to their caffeine content. According to the evidence, consumption of the energy drinks with alcohol is growing, which has serious adverse health effects.
These risks are an especially big concern having in mind that the biggest consumers of the energy drinks are young people and now it has become a significant public health problem.
However, more research is needed that evaluates the long-term effects of consuming common energy drink ingredients. Even though some studies claim that stimulants in energy drinks are not dangerous on their own, but combining them might seriously damage health.
In order to avoid the possible side-effects of the energy drinks, take a cup of coffee instead of an energy drink, which will protect you from the possible horrific effects.
